What is an emerald worth?

Just like all gemstones, the value of an emerald depends on its weight, purity, colour and cut quality. Unlike sapphire, where the focus is on the most intense possible colour, the emerald is lighter in tint and a little more transparent. Even so, darker examples are slightly more valuable than light green. Especially high prices are paid for certain extremely rare emeralds: their price per carat even exceeds that of diamonds.
