How to clean your diamond ring without damaging it

How to clean your diamond ring without damaging it

Cleaning your diamond ring is rather important if you want to maintain its beautiful radiance. Most women (and men!) wear their dearest diamond rings, such as engagement and/or wedding rings, every day. Because of this, they are often exposed to various external factors: dust and oil-rich products, for example. It is thus of importance to thoroughly clean your rings from time to time, which you can easily do yourself. Carefulness is advisable, because before you know it, you can damage your ring beyond repair. We gladly give you some tips.

Cleaning your ring at home

It is better to have your ring cleaned professionally, but you can do it yourself as well. We do advise you to regularly bring your ring to a specialist, to have it checked. The following steps will guarantee your diamond ring shines again, without damaging it:

  1. Add a splash of ammonia to lukewarm water.
  2. Submerse your diamond ring in this fluid for about 10 to 20 minutes.
  3. Brush the diamond carefully with a soft toothbrush. Be cautious to avoid the precious metal, as brushing it may cause scratches to appear.
  4. Dry the ring off with a fibre cloth. Tip: there are cloths especially for precious stones.

Be careful

When cleaning your ring you should be careful, but when wearing your ring too, cautiousness is advised. Diamond may be one of the hardest materials on earth, that doesn’t mean they can’t be damaged. Preferably, you don’t wear your diamond rings when doing exercise or when you are cleaning your house, because your diamond will show signs of wear before you know it. That toothpaste can be used to clean your diamond is untrue and could actually cause irreparable damage. As soon as you notice your diamond being damaged, you should go to a jeweller.
