Is emerald a gemstone?

The emerald is certainly one of the valuable gemstones, like the ruby, sapphire and diamond. It also meets the definition of a gemstone: a durable, rare stone with a certain hardness. The emerald is akin to the aquamarine. This gemstone was very popular in Ancient Egypt. It was incorporated in amulets and even used as grave good in pharaohs' tombs.
