What is a blood diamond?

Blood diamonds are also called conflict diamonds. They are extracted in conflict areas by men, women and children who have to work in inhumane conditions. The proceeds are usually used to fund guerrilla movements. Countries that were known for active trade in blood diamonds in the past include Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast.

Thanks to the launch of the Kimberley Process in 2002, in which almost 50 countries are involved, it is next impossible to purchase this kind of diamond today.
