Responsible Jewellery Council

The RJC is an organization that guards over a range of issues in the diamond supply chain, including human rights, labor rights, environmental impact, and product disclosure. The RJC works with its members, which include jewellery manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers, to implement these standards and improve their practices.

Members are required to undergo independent third-party audits to ensure they are meeting the RJC Code of Practices. The RJC also engages in outreach and education to raise awareness, as collaborating with other industry groups, NGO's, and governments to promote ethical sourcing of minerals and to support community development in areas where mining takes place.

By promoting responsible practices throughout the jewellery supply chain, the RJC aims to build consumer trust in the industry.

Kimberly process

The entire diamond industry is closely monitored by independent third party quality labels, such as the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). The Kimberly Process, established in 2003, has been instrumental in eliminating 'conflict diamonds' sold by rebel groups or their allies to fund conflicts against legitimate governments.

The KPCS requires that diamond-producing countries put in place strict measures to ensure that all diamond exports are certified as conflict-free. The KPCS also requires participating countries to exchange information about their rough diamond trade, to maintain strict import and export controls, and to commit to transparent reporting and regular review of the process.
