The tests to find out if a diamond is real or not

  • The fog test to check the authenticity of a diamond
  • The light reflection test to check the authenticity of a diamond
  • Ask a professional or a jeweller for advice

For an engagement ring, a necklace or any other jewel, a diamond is the most requested gemstone. That is normal, as it is both a gorgeous and sustainable gemstone. When you want to buy a diamond as an investment, the quality is of course very important. But how do you make sure you are dealing with a real diamond? Here are some tips to help you choose the right precious stone.

  • 0.45 carat trilogy ring in white gold with round diamonds From USD 1.020

  • 1.00 carat solitaire ring in white gold with princess diamond and side diamonds From USD 2.110

The fog test to check the authenticity of a diamond

If you would like to check the authenticity of your diamond yourself, then there is nothing easier than the fog test. You just breathe on the diamond. When there is no fog on your diamond, it is a real diamond. If there is a fog, then you have another sort of precious stone or simply a synthetic diamond. It is important to know that a diamond generally remains transparent and clear, even when exposed to very high temperatures.

The light reflection test to check the authenticity of a diamond

Between the various authenticity tests that distinguish a real diamond from a fake one, you can perform the reflection test yourself as well. Diamonds get their clarity from external light that surrounds them. In general, other gemstones do not shine like that. To run the test, you can use a newspaper. Can you read the reversed text through the diamond? Then it is not a real diamond. This can also be done with a black dot drawn on a white sheet. If your diamond is real, you will not be able to see the dot.

Ask a professional or a jeweller for advice

If you are not sure about the tests you are doing at home, you can go to a diamond expert to test your gemstone. There are multiple tests that can be done to ensure the authenticity of your diamond. The most commonly used methods are the microscope test, the scales test, using scales that are highly sensitive, as well as the test under a UV lamp. As specialists are experienced in this matter, it is also the time to find out more about your diamond.
