Forget about the 4Cs (carat, colour, clarity and cut) used to define the quality of colourless diamonds. Coloured diamonds are rated with a classification system based on the intensity of their colour. Natural coloured diamonds are known as fancy coloured diamonds and are very rare. They occur in every colourimaginable, from yellow and brown and green to pink and blue.

If you’re looking for something less traditional than a colourless Solitaire diamond, you will love coloured diamond engagement rings. They’re becoming increasingly popular. When valuing a coloured diamond, it’s the intensity of its colour that determines its value. Coloured diamonds are even cut with different qualities in mind. The cutter will always try to maximise the colour intensity of the finished stone, while clarity is of lesser importance.
A slightly coloured diamond with low saturation and thus no intense colouring will have a lower value. Depending on the depth and intensity of the colour, the value of these diamonds will go up. A nicely coloured diamond will be rather expensive. But, if you’re willing to spare no expense to woo the person of your dreams, then a coloured diamond engagement ring is the perfect option. Pink diamond engagement rings are most popular, followed closely by yellow diamonds.
To grade coloured diamonds, GIA developed the GIA Coloured Diamond Grading System that quantifies the hue, tone and saturation of the coloured diamond. Hue defines the colour, i.e., red, green, blue or yellow. Tone defines the lightness or darkness of the colour, and saturation determines the depth of the colour (faint, intense or vivid, etc.) There are a total of about 27 tints, and these are often a combination of two or more colours like orange-yellow or purple-pink. Terms like Fancy Light, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Dark and Fancy Deep describe the tone and saturation of the diamond.
