The traditional price rule is that an engagement ring should cost two months’ wages. This rule arose in response to a marketing campaign by diamond company De Beers in the 1980s. In Belgium, however, the price is around €1000 for a simple ring. The average price of an engagement ring depends greatly on several factors. We want to explain what to expect.

What determines the price of an engagement ring?
The type of precious metal
The diamond size
If you want to buy an engagement ring with diamonds, you should pay attention to the 4Cs. The 4Cs are quality features that should always be listed on the certificate of your diamond.
- Carat
- Colour
- Clarity
- Cut
The clarity and colour are the most important. So choose a diamond that scores at least VS2 or SI1 on the clarity scale and is ranked G or H on the colour scale. The value indication determines the price of your engagement ring.
The diamond cut shape
A baguette cut will not match the sparkle of a brilliant. That is why it is best to compare the different cut shapes before you make a choice.
The quality of the cut is indicated by the terms “excellent”, “very good”, “good”, “fair” and “poor”. You can always find this on the diamond certificate. The better the quality of the chosen diamond, the more expensive your engagement ring will be.
The colour of the diamond
Instead of a colourless diamond, you can also choose a naturally coloured diamond or a precious stone. A coloured diamond, such as a pink diamond, is a unique choice for your engagement ring. Keep in mind that it will also increase the cost as this type of diamond is very rare.

How much does an engagement ring with precious stones cost?
A precious stone can be a lovely replacement for a diamond and will also be easier on your budget. For an extra special touch, you can also combine the two, for example, in a halo setting.
