Every watch includes a transparent glass which protects the watch dial and hands. Next to protecting your watch, it also plays an important part in making your precious timepiece water resistant. There are 3 types of glasses used in the industry: mineral, sapphire and acrylic glass. While acrylic is only used in cheaper watches, mineral and sapphire glass are both often used in watches of high quality. But what are mineral glass and sapphire glass and what exactly is the difference between both?
Mineral glass differentiates itself from sapphire glass on different aspects.
The first one, is the price. Whilst mineral glass is more expensive than acrylic glass, the price is much lower compared to the price of sapphire glass. This is one of the primary reasons why only high-end luxury watches are using sapphire glass as opposed to mineral glass.
Secondly, both types of glasses have a different hardness, which is measured with Mohs scale of mineral hardness, and graded from 1 to 10. Sapphire glass has a value of 9 out of 10, making it nearly impossible to scratch. Only a diamond, which has a score of 10 and is the hardest mineral, can scratch a sapphire glass. On the other hand, mineral glass has a value of 5-6 on 10. That doesn’t mean that scratches will appear just like that. Mineral glass is still a durable glass that will protect your precious watch.
Mineral and sapphire glass are very hard to differentiate with the naked eye. Generally, mineral glass might have a light blue appearance, while sapphire can have a light pink look. However, it’s quite unlikely that you can determine the difference in colour just like that.
In the BAUNAT collections, mineral glass is used on the watches of our Italian collection which are perfect for everyday use. In the watches of the Swiss Collection, sapphire glass is used, which certainly adds value to these remarkable timepieces.
