The prong setting is most commonly used with the solitaire diamond ring. The prongs which hold the diamond in place are in an open position and let in the most light of all of the different settings. It can be used with most diamond shapes and is available in various different finishes.
The pavé setting is most commonly used with small diamonds in a row. This setting positions the gemstones very closely together and barely any precious metal is visible on the diamond ring. The many diamonds in a row result in a brilliant shine, as a result of the small precious metal prongs which keep them in place.
