A chain or a collier are the highlight of a formal evening outfit, with no other piece of jewellery catching the eye at a ball, a visit to the opera, or a party, quite so much as a necklace.

Which types of luxurious necklaces are there?

Like beauty, luxury is in the eye of the beholder, and when it comes to jewellery, the notion of luxury often goes hand in hand with particularly spectacular and lavish designs. However, with regard to jewellery in particular, luxury often refers more to the quality, the finish, and the selection of the diamonds and other precious stones.

A good example is this rejuvenating necklace with 20.10-carat diamonds. A truly classic diamond collier, that impresses less through fashionable extravagance, and more through the beauty of the processed diamonds. A real eye-catcher, yet timeless at the same time.

Opulent luxury is particularly popular in the USA, with one example of this being the “A Heritage in Bloom” necklace, which jeweller Wallace Chan spent more than 47,000 hours producing by hand. In addition to other precious stones, it contains 619 predominantly pink diamonds – a masterpiece with a price to match, at 200 million US dollars. Not the most expensive necklace in the world, but one of the most valuable pieces of jewellery in recent decades

What should I bear in mind when purchasing a luxury necklace?

As with other pieces of diamond jewellery, the price and the value of a luxury collier, pendant, or necklace is determined largely by the precious stones used and, to a lesser extent, the precious metal used. The more precious the stones, the less weight the material will carry.

4 quality criteria define the value of diamonds, which are also referred to as the 4 Cs of diamonds. Carat, colour, clarity, and cut. The bigger a diamond is, and the better it performs in the other three areas, the more rare, and consequently the more expensive it will be.

This raises the question as to whether a piece of jewellery should be purchased primarily with a view to making a good investment, or “just” as a piece of jewellery. It is primarily diamonds of the highest quality that are considered suitable as an investment, in particular those with the popular brilliant cut.

The best value for money is to be found in very good quality, the absolute top end, i.e. diamonds in colours G or H, with minimal inclusions - VS2/SI1, with a very good cut. Without a jeweller’s loupe, these are visually indistinguishable from the crème de la crème of diamonds, colour D/E, flawless and with an excellent cut. However, the difference in price is considerable.

The following rule of thumb applies: A luxurious collier, an elegant pendant, or a luxurious necklace certainly needs to be affordable. The only diamonds you should avoid are those of low quality, often referred to as Piqué diamonds, which feature severe, dark inclusions that are visible to the naked eye – even if you are offered one at a tempting price.
