When is the Chinese New Year celebrated?

The Chinese calendar is based on the phases of the moon. This is why the Chinese New Year is not celebrated on a fixed date each year, but falls on the 23rd day of the 12th moon cycle of that year instead. This year, that day is the 16th of February. The festivities last approximately 7 days, but the official end of the New Year celebrations is 15 days after their start. The Chinese zodiac is closely linked to the festivities. Every year is characterized by one of the 12 zodiac animals. 2018 is the Year of the Dog, a symbol of luck.

This results in a cycle of 12 years. Each zodiac animal tells us something about the people born during that year. This can be further subdivided as well, for more specific characteristics.

Which traditions are part of the festivities?

Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival, celebrating new beginnings. This theme is underlined by wearing bright red robes that ward off bad luck for the coming year. The loud bangs of the abundant fireworks are also said to chase away evil spirits, thus cleansing the start of the year. Parades, red lanterns and intricate fire shows add the finishing touch to the vibrant festivities.
