How does emerald form and where does emerald come from?

Like all gemstones, emeralds were formed millions of years ago when magma deep under the Earth's crust cooled down and solidified. Certain minerals then formed crystals. Emeralds were formed from the mineral beryl in the presence of chromium, which provides the green colour. Next to the greatest producer, Colombia, emeralds are also found in South Africa, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
