How is a diamond ring increased or reduced in size?
Reducing a diamond ring in size involves taking a piece out of the band and subsequently re-joining the ends again. Increasing the size of the diamond ring usually involves stretching the precious metal which the ring band has been made from. If the ring is far too small, the jeweller will usually cut open the band and melt in an extra piece of precious metal.
Reducing the size of a diamond ring is always easier than increasing it. But in both cases you will barely be able to notice the adjustment, if at all.
Which rings can be adjusted?
The above adjustments can be applied to most of the current ring models. However, if the diamond ring has a more intricate pattern, or contains lots of diamonds, this may not be possible. The eternity ring, with diamonds around the entire band, is almost impossible to adjust.
A size adjustment for a diamond ring like this, with closely fitting diamonds, could damage the stones.
How do you order the correct ring size in the first place?
The jeweller will always start with measuring the correct ring size. This professional measurement guarantees a well-fitting ring. However, if the ring is a surprise, you would be best off basing the ring size on a ring which the person often wears. You can make use of a useful app and place the ring on your smartphone screen, which will then read the size.
