The traditional price rule is that an engagement ring should cost two months’ wages. This rule arose in response to a marketing campaign by diamond company De Beers in the 1980s. In Belgium, however, the price is around €1000 for a simple ring. The average price of an engagement ring depends greatly on several factors. We want to explain what to expect.

What determines the price of an engagement ring?

The price rule for an engagement ring depends on its cost. This is determined by the chosen metals and precious stones, the quality and carats of the diamonds, the cut and the setting. The table above provides a good estimate of what you will get for a certain amount.

The type of precious metal

When thinking about the price rule for your engagement ring, it depends on the precious metal. For an engagement ring, people often opt for yellow gold because it has a classic, timeless look. However, you can also opt for an engagement ring in white goldplatinum or even red gold. A combination of two metals is also possible, but then you should choose a more minimal design. The price rule for an engagement ring is that it will vary according to the choice of material. For example, platinum will be a little more expensive.

The diamond size

The size of a diamond is expressed in carats. The number of carats in a diamond is much debated, but worldwide, the average is between 1.00 and 1.09. The rule for the price of an engagement ring is: the higher the carat, the more expensive the engagement ring will be.

If you want to buy an engagement ring with diamonds, you should pay attention to the 4Cs. The 4Cs are quality features that should always be listed on the certificate of your diamond.

  • Carat

  • Colour

  • Clarity

  • Cut

The clarity and colour are the most important. So choose a diamond that scores at least VS2 or SI1 on the clarity scale and is ranked G or H on the colour scale. The value indication determines the price of your engagement ring.

The diamond cut shape

The brilliance of a diamond affects the price rule for an engagement ring. It is largely determined by the cut shape and the quality of the cut. For example, a round brilliant has the greatest brilliance because it was cut with 57 facets reflecting the light. The princess cut is also known for its brilliance, although this cut is usually less pricey.

baguette cut will not match the sparkle of a brilliant. That is why it is best to compare the different cut shapes before you make a choice.

The quality of the cut is indicated by the terms “excellent”, “very good”, “good”, “fair” and “poor”. You can always find this on the diamond certificate. The better the quality of the chosen diamond, the more expensive your engagement ring will be.

The colour of the diamond

Most engagement rings have a colourless diamond, with a certain colour grading from D to Z. A diamond in colour D is the purest white and is extremely rare. Want to go against the price rule for an engagement ring and are looking for one on a slightly lower budget? Then choose a diamond in the colour G or H. The diamond is still virtually colourless, but it is a lot cheaper.

Instead of a colourless diamond, you can also choose a naturally coloured diamond or a precious stone. A coloured diamond, such as a pink diamond, is a unique choice for your engagement ring. Keep in mind that it will also increase the cost as this type of diamond is very rare.

Diamond setting

Depending on the cut shape, you can also choose a specific setting for your diamond. Different settings will have different price rules for an engagement ring. For example, a cathedral setting will make your diamond look bigger. Another setting option is the bezel setting. It is best to use this when your fiancé/e is very active as the diamond should not become dislodged. You can also opt for a halo setting where you get a circle of small diamonds around the central diamond. With a trilogy ring, you can have a central diamond flanked perfectly by two smaller diamonds. This simple combination looks very elegant.

How much does an engagement ring without a diamond cost?

The classic engagement ring is a yellow gold ring with a solitaire diamond. However, you do not have to opt for an engagement ring with a stone. There are plenty of simple styles without a stone, which is a way you could get around the price rule for an engagement ring. These engagement rings also require less of your budget, and the price largely depends on the type of precious metal you prefer. To give the engagement ring a personal touch, you could opt for an engraving or a special finish such as milgrain.

How much does an engagement ring with precious stones cost?

Bright precious stones make your engagement ring a true statement ring. The type of gemstone will change the price rule for the engagement ring. You can choose between a red ruby, blue sapphire or a green emerald. These precious stones can also vary in size, clarity and quality. Their prices, therefore, also depend on different characteristics. Always consider your partner’s personality and taste in your choice.

A precious stone can be a lovely replacement for a diamond and will also be easier on your budget. For an extra special touch, you can also combine the two, for example, in a halo setting.
