Jewellery that you wear every day is best cleaned several times throughout the year to maintain its lustre, day in day out. For jewellery that you perhaps wear once or twice a year it's enough to clean or simply dust the pieces a couple of times a year.

Below we have outlined how you can easily and safely clean your gold ring (with or without a diamond) yourself. On top of that, have your jewellery professionally cleaned by a jeweller once or twice a year.

In particular, jewellery worn every day, such as your gold diamond wedding ring, requires regular cleaning. Blemishes deriving from your skin, dust, cleaning products or even just water, create a layer of tarnish on your ring rendering it dull and lackluster.

Cleaning your diamond or gold ring

Diamond may well be one of the hardest materials in the world, but a diamond ring is best polished with a gentle touch. Everyday cosmetics, such as hair spray, moisturiser, make-up or perfume contain chemicals that can render your jewellery dull or greasy, or even damage it. It is easy to return luster to your jewellery again, by removing dust, dirt and grease yourself.

One easy, quick way of doing so is to soak your diamond ring for twenty minutes in a solution of lukewarm water with a tiny amount of ammonia. Carefully polish the stone with a soft toothbrush and rinse under warm running water. Repeat if necessary.

Chemicals best to avoid

As certain chemicals can damage your jewellery it is recommended to never use harsh household cleaning agents such as bleach, chlorine or acetone to clean your jewellery with. These can degrade some of the base metals in your ring. Nor should you ever use abrasive agents such as toothpaste, baking powder or powder-based cleaning agents to clean your ring. These substances can scratch the precious metal.

Having your jewellery cleaned by a jeweller

If your jewellery is very dirty it is advisable to have it professionally cleaned, but annual upkeep by your jeweller will also ensure your diamond or gold ring retains its luster. Why is it recommended to have your jewellery cleaned by an expert?

  • Abrasive materials such as sand are hard to remove without the aid of specialist equipment. Should you try to remedy this yourself at home, you run the risk of damaging your jewellery.

  • Your jeweller can easily eliminate minor imperfections through polishing.

  • The jeweller uses professional cleaning products specifically intended for cleaning precious metals and precious stones.

The jeweller cleans your jewellery professionally using ultrasonic equipment. They clean the jewellery by sending vibrations through the water and cleaning solution. It is not advisable to buy such equipment as this to use at home. Although we make solid diamond rings, vibrations such as these can loosen the precious stones, or even cause them to fall out completely.

Safekeeping your jewellery

Your jewellery is best kept in individual boxes. This prevents scratching and damage occurring. The best thing is to keep each item of jewellery in its original packaging, or soft fabric pouch. To prevent oxidation, do not expose your jewellery to moist air, and always keep your jewellery in a dust-free place.

When is it advisable not to wear jewellery?


  • On the beach — Wearing jewellery on the beach is not recommended. Grains of sand can scratch the precious metal. They can also penetrate the diamond(s) and metal setting. Should this be the case be sure to ask a professional to expertly remove the grains of sand.

     

  • In the sea — If you're going for a swim in the sea it is advisable to remove your engagement ring or other jewellery first. Saltwater can also erode the soldered components of gold rings. In the worst case scenario this can even result in fractures. Red gold in particular is extremely sensitive to salt due to the copper present in this precious metal.

     

  • In the swimming pool — Remove any jewellery before diving into the pool. Chlorine can damage jewellery. This is why it is advised to remove any gold or diamond rings while swimming.   • Set your wedding or engagement ring separately aside before playing sports or undertaking household chores. Be aware of hard surfaces you might come into daily contact with, such as metal filing cabinets or marble worktops.

  • Wear any rings set with precious stones separately, or on another finger or hand. Multiple rings that knock against or scratch each other can fissure.

  • Keep your rings and jewellery in a soft jewellery box. Ideally, keep your jewellery in its original box provided by the jeweller. These boxes are designed with protection in mind.
