The origin of Mother’s day
The exact origin of Mother’s day is not really known, but some say that this holiday originated from the church, as many historians believe that it came directly from the Christian practice of visiting mothers on the fourth Sunday in the season of Lent (Laetare Sunday) in the 16th-century.
The origin as we know it today is believed to have come from a woman named Anna Jarvis from West Virginia. This lady started in 1905 a campaign for an official day to honour mothers, the very year her own mother passed away. It is believed the first large-scale celebrations a Mother’s day took place in 1908 when Anna held a public memorial for her mother in her hometown.
After that the holiday was increasingly celebrated across America as Anna pushed for an official recognition. It finally came in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making Mother’s Day an official holiday. This day was to take place the second Sunday of May.
Today, depending on the countries, it is celebrated on different days of the year, from February to December. In the UK for instance, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
