What are the similarities and differences between yellow and white gold?

Yellow gold is a precious metal that occurs naturally. In its purest form, 99,9%, it is 24 karats, but given that it is a very soft metal that bends easily out of shape at 24kts, it is usually mixed with alloys to make it harder and more durable. For instance, 18kt yellow can be obtained by mixing 75% gold, 12.5% copper and 12.5% silver or 75% gold, 15% copper and 10% silver for a darker yellow colour.

White gold on the other hand does not occur naturally, it is the result of an alloy of gold. To obtain white gold you usually mix pure gold with silvery-white coloured metals such as palladium and silver for a whiter finish.

But this alloy does not only act as a whitening agent, it is also used to make the metal rigid and therefore more durable.

White gold is also additionally coated with a precious metal called Rhodium for an added white lustrous sheen. This coating further adds strength and durability to the piece of jewellery. Yellow gold on the other hand is never coated.

Choosing between yellow and white gold eternity rings

Eternity rings are rings that are set with one row of fairly small diamonds, placed one after the other very closely in a continuous line.

How do you choose between yellow and white gold eternity rings? As mentioned earlier, it is primarily a question of taste. Often it is also based on the metal of your engagement ring or your wedding band so that they match. But the most important thing when deciding is to select the ring that really makes your heart skip a beat.

Nevertheless, it is good to know that with white gold eternity rings, you should choose a highercolour grade for the diamonds from G-H upwards. Because if the grade is lower, it will be more noticeable than if you choose a yellow gold eternity ring.
